"Has it All!"
If you can handle some tourists, Sonoma Plaza is the BEST spot in town. It is a great apres-tasting spot - you can even bring your own bottles and drink in the park if you wish. The square of grass is filled with trees, and offers excellent shading and relaxation in this vibrant, but not massively overstated, town.
This really is the heart of Sonoma. You can check out the wineries that are right here, all within walking distance, or come here at the end of the day to indulge in one of the many fantastic restaurants. The trees are nicely spaced apart (perfect for a slackline - although I am sure not too many people care about this detail) and you can walk through the park or circumnavigate it to the side.
The central square serves as the unifying factor for this downtown area. Given that this is wine country, traffic is not as bad as it would be for a similar spot in just about any other town. Some may call it a tourist trap...but I call it a perfect layout, and a great alternative to the more expensive neighbor immediately east.
