South Johnson St, Mineola

South Johnson Street runs south from Hwy 80 to Hwy 69S, though it is no longer connected. The first block of this street is located north of the train tracks and has many historic buildings still in use. What use to be the crossing is now a memorial and gazebo on the north side and a recreational area on the south side of the train tracks, complete with a pavillion, horseshoes, basketball court and picnic areas. There is also an Amtrac Station right beside the pavillion, a great addition to Mineola but it does add to the noise and traffic delays. There are many residential home along South Johnson Street and eateries, a meat market, hardware store and much more only blocks away. During the summer months, one of the ladies who lives on South Johnson Street offers a small produce stand, selling produce she and her husband grows right in the neighborhood! The futher south you go on this street, the rougher the neighborhood gets. The southern 2 blocks seem to suffer from the same drug problem that is seen on neighboring streets.
