"Give the Neighborhood Kudos...."

Eliot is a neighborhood to watch. Currently, it is a community with popular restaurants and some nice residential neighborhoods, but yet, there are parts that need some definite improvement. It is full of potential given the pride long time residents feel for their community. Also, with the business area being redeveloped, this could be the next up and coming place in Portland. Just recently it was announced that New Seasons will be opening a market in here. This is another encouraging sign.

Eliot is convenientally located on the East side of the Willamette River and close to everything. You can get anywhere in a matter of minutes via car or public transportation. Homes in Eliot are older with many having historic charm and good curb appeal. Other neighborhoods are quite run down. If you prefer more modern housing, sleek and contemporary condos are here and many carry a hefty price tag.

As mentioned, Eliot is a prime location for some of Portland's more diverse restaurants, including Toro Bravo and Queen of Sheba Ethiopian. Lots of good choices all centrally located.

"A Neighborhood with Historical Character"

Eliot is located in an extremely convenient place. It is close to a wide variety of "happening" areas including the Beaumont-Wilshire and Alberta areas, Mississippi district and even the shopping and restaurants in the Belmont/Hawthorne District. Plus, the Fremont Bridge can quickly take you to downtown.

You see a wide variety of different types of people living in this area including families, and seniors. It is one of those places where you will see well-kept renovated homes across the street from dilapidated buildings with piles of trash. You can indeed find some great homes in this part of town for a very affordable budget. You don't get the feeling that you are extremely safe in this area, but it isn't horrible either.

Eliot itself offers a variety of interesting shops and restaurants including the Nike Store, The Wonder Ballroom, and one of my favorite restaurants Toro Bravo. Some other fun places to hangout are the Wonder Ballroom and Tiny's Coffee. Also in Eliot is the Legacy Emanuel Hospital, which is one of the city's main hospitals. Undoubtedly, many of the area's establishments are frequented by hospital staff.

"Urban Neighborhood with Character"

Eliot is a North Portland neighborhood with a great mix of residential and retail spaces. This urban neighborhood has character that you won't find in newer areas of the city.

This close-in Portland neighborhood offers easy access to everything. It's a great location for commuters; with onramps for I5 and I84, plenty of buses, and the MAX light rail, it's easy to get most places in Portland from Eliot.

The neighborhood itself also offers plenty to do, including popular restaurants, shops, and music venues. It's best known for its restaurants, with a wide variety of culinary options from all over the world. There are also plenty of bars. Two popular neighborhood landmarks include the McMenamin's White Eagle Saloon, which supposedly used to be a brothel, and the Wonder Ballroom, a historic lodge that's now a cafe, bar, and event space. There's also the community center, which offers an indoor swimming pool.

Eliot has a reputation for being a little rough around the edges in some spots, though other areas of the neighborhood are filled with charming, well-kept older homes. This diverse, older neighborhood is home to residents who are fighting hard to hold onto the neighborhood's past in the face of the commercial redevelopment that has come to the area over the past few decades. Eliot was recently in the news as residents fought successfully to keep a McDonald's from moving in.

There are several new condo and apartment buildings here, in addition to new commercial spaces, bringing in a flood of new residents. These developments are likely to change the flavor of the neighborhood with time. It will be interesting to see how these new developments change Eliot.
