"A tight knit little community on the eastern plains"

Wray is a small agricultural town on the eastern plains of Colorado. The town's population is is just over 2,300 in this closely knit community, which has an almost zero crime rate. While the cost of living here is much lower than the rest of the state, so are the median income and housing costs. The town's population is predominantly White, at just over 82%. Construction is the largest industry in Wray, wtih health care coming in a close second, as there is a hospital in this small little town.

Wray has the usual things you'd find in a small town, such as convenience store, hardware store, and a grocery store. There are a few restaurants as well. The thing that makes this little community stand out is the great parks and recreation it has for it's residents. The Wray swimming pool has a great outdoor slide system, and the parks here are all kid friendly, with great playgrounds. Another neat thing to see in Wray is the museum. This small but interesting museum holds many bones and fossils from years gone by. There are also numerous photographs and mounted animals from around the world. Well worth the cost of $1.00 admission.

Overall, the school system in Wray is better than average. Kids here score higher on state standardized tests than many other school districts and there is a real firm community feel to the town. This would be an ideal place to live for a family who wanted small town living and a solid community atmosphere.

"Wray -- just a stone's throw from Nebraska/Kansas border"

Wray is a town of 2,500 is only about 10 miles from the Nebraska line and where the border between Nebraska and Kansas is. The Wray Municipal Airport is the quickest access to remote Wray other than the Denver International Airport to the west more than 100 miles away.

Wray is centered around agriculture and the local sports teams known as the Eagles. Wray and its sister Yuma County town of Yuma just to the west have a serious sports rivalry. In town there is a public golf course, recreation center, aquatic center and walking and bicycle paths. Fishing, bird watching and hunting are also popular Wray past times. The annual celebrations include a quilt show, a car show, chili contest and a holiday parade of lights.

Wray is remote but it is home to the regional medical center and has a full time surgeon on duty. Homes in town go for about $80,000--$300,000 for the larger farm style houses. There are some lovely farm houses in and around town and some historic buildings.
Pros
  • lower cost of living
  • good community
  • team sports
Cons
  • far from Front Range
  • remote
  • very hot summers
