"Yes, the home of the auto museum and the bog"

A little history:
http://www.villageofvolo.com/history/

I have lived in Volo since 2006 when I purchased my first home in a new subdivision. I was attracted to the area because of the close proximity to my job at the time as well as the affordability of new construction and potential for nearby retail development. Unfortunately, the housing values have declined and the retail development didn't surface, but as of 2014 when this review was written, prices have started to increase and conversations regarding development are beginning to happen again.

Prospective residents have a number of options available to them in the way of housing. Prior to the new construction boom of the 2000's (the population of Volo was only 180 in the 2000 census, increasing to 2,929 in 2010), there were more historic single-family homes scattered throughout town, but beginning with the Terra Springs townhouse community in 2003, new construction continued in earnest with the Symphony Meadows (townhouse, duplex, single family), Lancaster Falls (single family), and Autumn Grove (single family) subdivisions. New homes are still being built in Volo and developers are beginning to seek new development opportunities as current projects are nearing completion.

For commuters, the Metra Milwaukee North train has several stations nearby (Fox Lake, Ingleside, or Round Lake) that will get you downtown in 75-90 minutes depending on the train. For those who commute by car, driving in Lake County can be difficult due to congestion caused by the lack of multi-lane roads and no nearby access to expressways.

Dining options are limited in Volo, but nearby communities have a wide variety of restaurants including fast food, pizza, casual restaurants, and international cuisine. Shopping is also limited, but again, a quick 10-15 minute drive will get you to McHenry or Mundelein where there are many shopping choices.

Volo is generally a very quiet area, but things get busier in the summertime as vacationers drive through Volo to get to Chain of Lakes State Park and it's only 30-45 minutes to get to weekend destinations in Wisconsin such as Twin Lakes or Lake Geneva. You also know the weather is warming when you hear the sounds of motorcycle engines.

As I mentioned in the title, Volo is home to the famous auto museum as well as the Volo Bog State Natural Area.

While there are not many parks, access to Lake County Forest Preserve's Millennium trail is nearby for cyclists, walkers, and joggers.

If you prefer a quiet suburb with nearby access to activities and not the urban hustle and bustle, then Volo just might be the place to call home!
Pros
  • Affordable housing
  • Low crime
  • Quiet neighborhoods
Cons
  • Limited shopping nearby
  • Lack of nightlife
  • Difficult to commute
