"Marina del Rey-- Still cheaper than Santa Monica."

Marina del Rey is just a few miles south of Venice, yet this Los Angeles neighborhood is a much more upscale community. Marina del Rey is probably best known for its world largest man made harbor. This waterside community offers a huge variety of public boating which is great for fishing trips. Harbor tours and dinner cruises are also very popular. If you are looking for a home with a big yard, Marina del Rey is not the place for you. You would be better off looking in Playa del Rey, Santa Monica, Venice or Redondo Beach. A part of the Marina has a very touristy feel to it, such as the Fisherman’s Wharf area with its cute shops and great restaurants. Marina del Rey is great for apartment living, as many have a view of the harbor and the ocean. Rent is pretty high and parking can be quite a problem out there. There is enough to do in the Marina—great restaurants, parks, beaches, bike path, the harbor, shopping. The major employers in the area are hotels, airlines, and the L.A. Department of Beaches. Marina del Rey is still cheaper than Santa Monica.

"Yacht-City LA"

If you are looking for single people between the ages of 20 and 63 who are fairly well off, then you have come to the right place. Marina Del Rey is the largest man made yacht harbor in the world. When people venture on land they usually find their way to one of their apartments--the city is just about all apartments. Rents here are a pretty mixed bag. Given the yachts, you might expect to seeing eye-popping numbers when it comes to rental spaces, and their certainly are those—especially for the apartments that overlook the marina itself. However, throughout the city it is possible to find prices as low as $1500 for apartments near the beach.

A look at the demographics shows that close to three quarters of the population is either divorced or never married. The average home in this city houses less than two occupants, meaning there are a lot of couples and singles in this area. And, there are barely 500 residents under the age of 20. (In fact, there are only about 100 teenagers.) Put simply, this is a place where people live to enjoy the single life—to have fun weekends on their yachts, to eat and find fun uses for their disposable income.

There is also a strong business community here, with several companies making their homes in the business district. ICANN, the company in charge of registering and keeping track of domain names, for example, is here. The proximity to LAX and to the nearby nightlife of LA, also mean that the marina makes for a great spots for companies to wine and dine visiting clients.

Crime is low—only one murder here in the past three years (it may actually have been a mercy killing—and elderly woman was killed by her husband). There are some schools, but that is really beside the point in a place like Marina del Rey.
