Grand Saline

Grand Saline is a proud little East Texas town situated on Hwy 80 about 90 miles east of Dallas. In 2006, the population of this small town was estimated to be about 3,262... though most locals doubt the count is really that high. The largest employeer in the area is the Morton Salt Mine located just outside of town on FM 110. There is a new high school building and all of the grades are taught very adaquately. But the shopping here leaves a lot to be desired with only one true grocery store in town and the closest Walmarts being a good 20 minutes away in both Mineola and Canton. For really good shopping, Canton's First Monday Trade Days, Tyler and Dallas offer the best options. The people here are friendly enough if you corner them, otherwise fairly standoffish until they get to know you. The long-time residents like things to stay the same and wants nothing to do with changes that would bring more people to their little town. Unfortunately, Morton's rarely hires anymore, preferring instead to replace men with machines, hhiring only when absolutely necessary. The lack of jobs in and around the Grand Saline area causes a large number of the younger generation to leave their hometown for better prospects elsewhere. A drive through town will easily reveal that this town is really struggling to keep alive. There are a few new businesses scattered along Highway 80, but what it really needs is a big employeer to come to town... and soon!
For those who might be considering moving to Grand Saline, it is a very quiet place to live but many around this area believes it awaits a very dangerous fate. The Grand Saline Salt Mine has been in operation for the majority of the 1900's, tunnels have been dug and/or washed for miles all around... even Morton miners admit they have no way of mapping them! Many fear they will start seeing more sinkholes in and around the town. One such sinkhole fell right inside town in 1976. I am one of the many who felt it was too risky to raise my family on top of such a possible and unpredictable nightmare.
