"Burlington is just about Kansas"

Burlington is only 10 miles within the Colorado border and the first town you hit when coming from the east into Colorado along I-70. The country seat of Kit Carson County, Burlington is surrounded by big irrigation circles, ranches and the trucking industry. There are about 4,000 people who call the town home. Summers are Kansas dry and hot and windy and winters are dry and freezing and windy, but the sun does shine most days and the people are decent.

The average household income in Burlington is reported to be about $34,000 a year, less than the Colorado average but not far off the mark. You can not see the mountains from here, not for another hour or two drive but it is Colorado even though it just feels like Kansas:)

"A ranching and farming area on the eastern border of Colorado"

There are just over 4,000 people living in Burlington, Colorado which is the last big stop for food or gas before you enter Kansas. Since the weather and roads can get bad in this part of the state, there are also some small hotels and motels here for stranded or weary travelers. There are fast food restaurants, gas stations with souvenirs, and a few sit down restaurants.

The area here has many farms and ranches on plenty of acres. Since it's a small town there is only one elementary, middle school, and high school. Unfortunately, the elementary school is the only one which has average testing scores for the State of Colorado standardized tests. Both the middle and high school rate much lower than state averages.

The cost of living in this small town is lower than in many other areas of the state. The median home price is currently $95,000 while the median household income is $39,500. About 65% of the population is white and about 28% is hispanic.

While a town of this size may not be for everyone, it is a safe place to live. Yes, in recent years there has been a crime that made the state news, but it is rare and most of the community would say they feel safe here. Many families who live here have been here for generations and are still farming the same land their ancestors were farming years ago. For anyone looking for a retirement home, this could be the ideal town. The cost of living is low and the neighbors are all friendly.
