"A nice place for retirees to live."

The population here in Brookings consists of primarily empty nesters and retirees. Brookings is really close to the ocean and has a wonderful harbor and port. If you like to fish there is lots of fishing available - primarily for Salmon but there are plenty of other fish and also crab fishing as well. Generally speaking, housing is inexpensive and people are generally friendly with a lot of the population here from California (which some of the locals don't care for).

Although the area is beautiful and the ride along the coast is super there are what might be considered to some to be a few things that could be improved.

Starting with shopping. There is a Fred Meyers here and a Rays supermarket. Most everyone shops at Fred Meyers because Rays is so overpriced and does not have the selection of food that F Meyers has. There is no place like Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and the like to go to. You have to drive to Medford - some 2 1/2 hrs away to go to any dept. store, or places like COSTCO, Trader Joe's, etc..Personally I shop a lot online but I miss those places.

Not a lot of medical choices here. For Veterans, there is a small clinic and the closest Hospital is in Roseburg, OR - 3 plus hrs away driving. There is a small hospital here but I have heard nothing good about it.

There are a few good restaurants here - less than 5. The restaurant standards here leave a bit to be desired. If you don't have a taste for ethnic or specialty foods you'll probably be OK. But no chains except for MCD's, Taco Bell, KFC and subway.

It's also difficult to fly out of here. The closest commercial airport is in Crescent city, CA and not a lot of choices. Next closest is in Medford with more choices but with limited schedules. Forget Amtrak, its even further.

Lots of Port events throughout the year which fills the town up

There is no nightlife to mention, no dance clubs, but lots of Senior activities.
Pros
  • Great Coast Location
  • Good fishing
  • Cost of living a bit less
Cons
  • Not many shopping choices
  • Lack of good restaurant choices
  • Lack of good medical facilities
Recommended for
  • Retirees
  • Tourists
  • Country Lovers
  • Beach Lovers
