"Get Ready for a Drive..."
Highway 17 starts out as a standard state highway in Los Gatos, and quickly starts climbing the mountains of the coastal ranges in order to get into Santa Cruz county. This is a dicey drive to an otherwise very desirable location.
The lake views are lovely, although the climb up the hill is can be very accident-prone. Once you get over the hill, the redwoods prevent you from enjoying too many coastal vistas, although one can argue that the canopies of trees provide sufficient views of their own.
Commuters beware: Most people take 17 FROM Santa Cruz TO Los Gatos/San Jose, rather than vice versa, so the ideal drive would be to take this highway west in the morning, and east in the evening. If you can pull that off, of course. Just be careful!
