YOUR Most SF Place

Here's yet another topic that is a spin-off of another post (thanks again, @NIghtowl!) I posted last week asking what the truest, most quintessential SF neighborhoods are. While we can talk about sourdough bread over Anchor Steams at a bar overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge all day long, the true "SF spots" that we appreciate, the ones that resonate with us, are not necessarily the ones you see on Full House or in Rice-a-Roni commercials.

So, to that end, what are the true San Francisco spots that resonate with you? You know, the ones that everyone (or no one) has ever heard of?

Here's a start. The Embarcadero stands out to me. Not because I spend a lot of time there or think it is the most fun place to go out at night, but because I came for a visit last November before I was living here, and that was where I went. I met a friend from out of town at her hotel, walked around the piers, bought an organic breakfast sandwich from one of the shops in the market, and sat outside on the water while we ate, overlooking the SF Bay.

Part of the joy was having no clue where I was in the city, and just feeling like I was a part of it as I took it all in. And compared to Sacramento strip malls, I may as well have been in Cairo, given how exotic it felt by comparison.

I have another one regarding the Bay Bridge but I'll save that story for another post. Just wanted to give a context for what I meant above. Looking forward to hearing peoples' thoughts!

Verrrry cool post--topic! I have kind of a similar one. When I used to be a paralegal, I used to go to Yerba Buena Park and sit and watch the suits having lunch on the grass. I felt completely invisible but I felt like I could see the gear of the commercial machine turning, deals being made and plots being hatched.

Sometimes I would be scanning docs on the weekend and I would go downt there and watch the kids at the carousel and sometimes go in and see an exihibit there or at the SFMoma. Everything seemed so full of life in the city at that spot.

Of course, then I had to go back to scanning again and it was a total drag (even if the pay rocked!)

This is hard. I think the Ferry Building is a good choice. The Golden Gate Bridge is another. But I would have to say Ocean Beach for me.

Here's another one -

I used to travel out here from Connecticut once every 2-3 years to visit family. Needless to say, I LOVED coming out and was very sad to leave every time.

Last August, when I was living in Sacramento, I came into the city for a day and as I was leaving, the sun had set and all I could do was marvel at the skyline. I used to gaze out at it when I flew out, but this time, as I was driving over the Bay Bridge, all I could think to myself was "Wow, this IS home now!" It was a fantastic feeling and every time I drive over the Bay Bridge it's the same.
