Outsidelands

Is anyone going to Outsidelands tomorrow? I wish I were...the lineup sounds solid, although not nearly as good as last year...

I couldn't get there either, but I would have loved to go.

I would have loved to see Gogol Bordello, My Morning Jacket and The Strokes!

I wasn't to high on Kings of Leon (I think they are totally overrated right now).

Who did you want to see?

I would've preferred the Sunday lineup, particularly Slightly Stoopid, Nas & Damian Marley, and Social Distortion. Strokes on Saturday would've been cool, too.

However, I was more drawn in based on last year's INCREDIBLE lineup - Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Beastie Boys, Incubus, Black-Eyed Peas, Jason Mraz, and Modest Mouse.

You can also see the 2008 lineup here: http://www.coachella.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17329

Personally, I don't think 2010 holds a candle to either 2008 or 2009 - to go from Pearl Jam & et. al. as your headliner with Incubus and Jason Mraz as supporting acts, and have Kings of Leon as the headliner the following year is a serious downgrade (they are talented and definitely hot right now, but nowhere near the legends of years past). However, it sounds like a cool event and I have a serious weakness for outdoor venues, which adds to the experience. I also think, based on the acts that they bring in, that it can be a stellar opportunity to discover new acts in genres that we already like.

Someday...

In the meantime, Stern Grove is done on Sunday and I'm going rafting so I'm missing it :( Too much to do in this darn state...

@StephSF: Wow, that really is impressive from last year. I've actually heard of most of those bands and my tastes are mostly stuck back in the days of Vinyl. (Are the Beastie Boys still making albums--they're like middle-aged now aren't they?) Dave Mathews and the Black Eyed Peas at the same event would have been great.

Truthfully, I haven't even heard of any of the bands you gals mentioned from this year (except maybe Social Distortion--didnt' they used to be a Punk band?).

Although, I'm not a real fan of the outdoor musical venues--I always find the sound quality poor.

Yeah, two years ago was pretty good too, and headlined Radiohead, Tom Petty and Jack Johnson, with Beck as the next name on the list (they had some other good ones that you probably haven't heard of, frankly). Last year had some other big acts but there is a certain point at which you are just name dropping :)

For me, the outdoor venue is less about the sound quality and more about the experience. Someday I'll get to that one...and hopefully someday when they have a good lineup...

By the way, I don't know why this is labeled as SFSU. I must've misclicked...

You know who I would really love to see? The Yeah Yeah Yeahs! I've been really addicted to them lately. An there is this really cool YouTube for Black Tongue that I thought was there video it is so good, but it turns out some fan made it--really great!

Anyway, you are totally right about outdoor venues! Especially if you have an indoor job during the week--the last thing you want to do is be inside on the weekend.

Hmm, @Flowergirl, do you mind posting that video? I've heard of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs but haven't seen them perform and am not sure if I can place their songs right now...

@StephSF here are three--Maps is their most popular song--it got a lot of play earlier this year after they released their new album. I love it though I'm generally more of a fan of their lesser known stuff just because it is a lot rawer and freer. Some of their newer stuff is a little too polished for my taste. Here they are off of U-Tube--the first is Maps (there are a lot of version inculding an acoustic version and funny video by some Santa Cruz students--they're all good). The second is Black Tongue with the guy's video that I mentioned above and the third is Yeah! New York which barely anyone has ever heard of but that I really dig despite having never been to the Big Apple: Check 'em out:

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the lyrics on Black Tongue--if you can't tell by the title--are bit explicit.
