San Francisco is one of the more bike-centric cities I have ever been, and living and working here all of my life, it has been essential to own a bike. While the city can be very hilly and treacherous for the average commuter, as long as you have a place that's in the flatland, or you have an easier route to get to and from work/school, San Francisco definitely is a bike-friendly city in that regard.

Yes, there are many bike lanes and streets designated to accommodate both cars and bikes (probably more to come) all over the city. People also bike to CalTrain and BART which gives access to the rest of the Bay Area. The Muni buses also have bike racks on them if you need to use both bus and bike.
