"Great Neighborhood"

Just moved to this neighborhood and we love it!! We are a gay couple and our neighbors have been so friendly and welcoming! Easy access to getting around in the city without all the noise from the interstates. Much cheaper for us as well since we moved out here from farther in SE and we were actually able to buy an affordable house with a large yard and have privacy. Very kid friendly too, highly recommend this neighborhood to anyone!

"Love this neighborhood"

We just bought a house here and we love this neighborhood! We have foun that it is a quiet neighborhood compared to closer in the city. It is still very easy to get around in the city, but it's significantly cheaper then where we lived previously closer in. Also, we were able to buy a house with a much bigger yard giving us more privacy. The neighbors have been very friendly and we have felt a great sense of community here! As a gay couple we have been very welcomed in our new neighborhood and feel very comfortable here, much more of a community feel then when we lived closer in SE. Very family friendly too! Highly recommend this neighborhood to anyone looking for more affordable living in Portland!

"Love this neighborhood!!"

We just moved into this neighborhood and we love it!! Have moved out of central SE due to increased rent and bought a lovely house with a huge yard! Very private, quiet, dead end street where you feel as though you are not really in the city! We were a little unsure of the neighborhood just because of what we heard from people, but the neighbors are extremely family friendly and kids play out in the streets without worry! I couldn't be more pleased with this neighborhood, love the diversity and coming from a more hipster area of Portland, we have so welcomed and more neighborly with the people in this area then our previous neighborhood! It is a gay friendly area too, we have felt very welcomed by all our neighbors! Convience to getting into the city without using the highways and interstates is also a big plus of this neighborhood! And the housing prices are half the cost of houses literally 5 minutes down the road! We highly recommend this area to anyone!

"Diverse Family Neighborhood With Strong Community Yet Needs Work"

Powellhurst-Gilbert is located in SE Portland and is a diverse yet vibrant community who has a small group of citizens dedicated to improving their town. Oregon pioneers once roamed and settled here and today, Powellhurst-Gilbert is filled with young families who appreciate the areas good schools and affordable home prices. Commuting into downtown Portland is simple via Division and Powell streets, themain roads that run through Powellhurst-Gilbert.

There are areas here that need some improving as they are quite run down and many small family owned business are now vacant which is always a sad sight. A few successfull businesses here would make all the difference.

Gilbert Heights Park is located here and it has plenty of space to start a football or baseball game with lots of room for the kiddies to play. I have a feeling that Powellhurst-Gilbert will be a town to watch in the coming years.

"A Blue-Collar Residential Neighborhood"

Just south of SE Division Street and east of I205 lies Powellhurst-Gilbert. Often this neighborhood gets grouped with the neighboring Lents or Pleasant Valley areas, and the exact north and south boundaries are not clearly defined, so what lies in the neighborhood depends on how you define it.

Most residents seem to be families with young kids who enjoy the area's nice schools and parks. Bordering the east edge of the neighborhood is Powell Butte Nature Park, a great place for an afternoon stroll. There are also several smaller parks contained within the neighborhood itself.

It seems pretty average or maybe a bit more blue-collar than the rest of Portland's residential neighborhoods. Most of the homes are modest but well-kept, single story homes lining wide streets. Though there aren't any sidewalks, you're likely to see kids playing or riding their bikes, as many of Powellhurst-Gilbert's neighborhood roads don't see too much traffic.

There are a few older apartment buildings and mobile homes, and the busier streets have some rundown strip malls. There are a few major routes through the neighborhood, such as SE Powell Boulevard and SE Holgate Boulevard, as well as a couple of major north-south arterials. If you're looking to move here, choose one of the quieter, interior streets of the neighborhood.

"Diversity and Strong Sense of Community Pride"

The Powellhurst / Gilbert neighborhood is in East Portland south of Mount Tabor. Due to the fact that it is right off both Division Street and Powell Street it provides easy access into SE Portland and also to downtown. It is easy to commute from this part of town. Also this area has some decent parks including Gilbert Heights, which is almost 4 acres and Raymond Park, which is almost 6 acres. Raymond Park, in particular, has good facilities for kids.

This neighborhood is quite diverse, unlike many Portland neighborhoods. This means that you will see not only different races, but also various ethnicities. The community spirit in Powellhurst / Gilbert is very strong, much stronger than in other surrounding communities. There are low-income families in this area, and many stores have gone out of business in recent years. You can also find low income housing options in this neighborhood. Unfortunately, some crime and drug use accompanies this issue. There is a lot of burglary, particularly around Holgate. Also auto theft and vehicle theft occurs every so often. However, the community is working to improve these issues. On the bright side, there are numerous dedicated people who really care about this part of Portland.
