Where are the best places to live in Oakland/San Francisco?

For me, safety and price are key. I am a single young female, so I want to make sure I will be safe when I go home at night. However, I don't want to go bankrupt either.

Why is there never anything featured about iveywood area of Oakland? I've recently discovered the area and its a true hidden gem- cheap houses with a lot of character, close to east bay parks, great access to public transport and bicycle lanes. Has all the benefits of the toney area of San leandro at a fraction of the price. Plus it's not a food desert, with existing grocery stores in close proximity and new ones on the way with the Foothill Square redevelopment. Plus lots are big and a lot of off the radar unban gardening is happening. Best of all, the area isn't overrun with hipsters. Real community.

Safety is relative in urban areas like SF and Oakland.

Generally speaking however, in the SF, the farther your get away from the Tenderloin the better. The Richmond District and the Sunset District are the best combination of safety and low cost (relative to the city of course).

In the East Bay, I would say that stay near the hills and you will be safer than on the western end where crime is higher. Rockridge and Temecula are very popular--but you can find deals on living spaces within peoples homes up in the hills of places like Piedmont which are really great if you don't mind living right by your landlord. (Also might try Albany if--apartments are cheaper there.)

About how much are you looking to spend? And do you have a car? Both change the equation a bit.

Anyway, good luck!
