Although Oakland overall has three times the crime rate of the US on average. The Grandlake neighborhood is somewhat safer than Oakland overall. There are lots of restaurants and activity in that area and some cool homes up in the hills nearby.
That said, I would not feel particularly safe walking around by after dark even if I was with a male friend. I would also not want to live alone in Oakland, as a single woman.
