Strange NYC living

I guess it's not weird physically, but I'm in awe of the actor housing in midtown. There's this magnificent building with massive apartments and an in-building gym: and, the rent is on a sliding scale for acting income. Pretty incredible.

@JenMac Wow, how does one get in on that? Is it only actors or artists in general?

You'd have to be Super Minimalist to live in there. The space looks adorable in pictures, and props to the guy for creativity, but I could not even bear a minute in there! I'm breaking into a sweat just thinking about a year spent in ping pong land.

@uraniumfish: apparently, the wait list is insanely long. And, yeah, it is strictly for actors. I imagine if I put my name on there, then maybe my grandkids will be able to claim by the time one is open.

Not that I'm interested in acting (at least not as part of my possible future), but does one have to be sort of established to even get on the insanely long waiting list? Isn't everyone an actor?

The space reminds me of a frat boy dwelling - really compact and sort of dorm like. But of course this one is much more aesthetically pleasing.

I think the place is cute. The problem is no sink to wash. I guess he gets up, goes down the ladder to wash up, and goes back up to dress. I wouldn't mind living in a place like that as long as I had a bathroom, place to store my food, and a place for my computer.

I'm a design freak, so I think the ping pong apartment is the coolest thing ever! My personal tastes tends to go towards Old World Europe or Middle-East-Inspired, but every now and then I swoon over a minimalist apartment.

@neversleeps: if you ask anyone in the acting community if everyone is an actor, you'll get a gasp as a response. We tend to get real uptight about that. I've studied it for years and it makes me insane when someone says "maybe I'll try that acting thing."

@Uraniumfish super cool living space but like NeverSleeps I could never live there I would get freaked out by all those ping pong balls! He must lead a hermit like existence he seems to have no'stuff'

@JenMac That's how I feel about people who have no artistic inclinations, but want some, and so decide to "write a novel." Like writing literature doesn't depend on studying all the literature that came before you! Like you can just write anything of substance without knowing anything about the art form! Like anyone can just... write a novel!

@JenMac Didn't mean to offend. I just meant, how do you weed out the people who think they are actors, but aren't? Or does this housing arrangement do that?

@NeverSleeps hmmm you have a point there.

@neversleeps: totally didn't offend me. Only Megan Fox offends me. I think the housing people do a comprehensive review like a co-op would. It started off as something for Broadway actors. They would make decent money when their show was running, but then might be unemployed for some time between shows. So, the rent would adjust accordingly. Now, I think they go over funds, unions, w-9s from jobs and training documentation before you can even go on the list. @broadway: so, you're saying you didn't buy Hilary Duff's Elixir?

@BroadwayBK, JenMac So agree! How belittling when people think that "writing a novel" is as easy as setting down some sentences on paper. And I was just at a script reading where one of the readers had been cast only to fill the slot - he was so inadequate at what he was doing compared to the other, real actors, who had actually thought about such things as inflection, emphasis, characterization. I mean really? He really thought being an actor is just saying some stuff out loud? It was excruciating.

@Uraniumfish Awww, that's kind of sad. Now I feel bad for scoffing at people's hopes and dreams. But...not that bad.
