Public transportation is actually pretty good, given that this is only a residential neighborhood. The 48 on Portola will take you through Twin Peaks to Noe Valley.

You can also take the Monterey Blvd. 23 right from the heart of the neighborhood east to the Glen Park BART station and then to anywhere in the East Bay.

And there is also light rail down on Ocean Ave--the 91 will take you to Balboa Park on the east and SFSU on the west.
