I am an avid rider and love to go to the Burbank Equestrian Center. There are many stables there lessons and rentals. Griffith park is also fun, there is a ride every week from the Burbank Center up into the park and back to Viva! the local Mexican spot in Burbank.

I'm not much of an equestrian, but according to a recent CBS news report the best places for horseback riding in LA are:

1. Griffith Park
2. Sunset Ranch (you go behind the Hollywood Sign on the trail, I think)
3. Diamond Bar Horse Rental in Glendale
4. Circle K Riding Stables in Burbank
and 5. Wagon Wheel Ranch in Palos Verdes

I also hear that up by Tujunga and Crescenta Heights is very horse friendly, but again, I wouldn't know from personal experience, just from horse affacionados that I used to know in LA.
