Oysters: get what you pay for

I just came across this listing for a cheap oysters place and wondered if anyone knows it? The oysters are cheap but is it a case of getting what you pay for? Reccommendable or not?

Cornelius
565 Vanderbilt Ave. at Pacific St., Prospect Heights, 718-398-6662
Offering: $1 oysters
When: Happy hour, from 5-7 p.m. and again 10 p.m. until closing, Tuesday through Thursday; all day Monday.
Popular pairings: Oysters are served on ice with lemon, cocktail, Tabasco and mignonette (a shallot and white wine mixture). Draft beers are $4 during happy hour.
Worth it?: Although one oyster may not make a meal, a few of the shellfish and a cold beer hit the spot.

@Uraniumfish I recently had some great oysters at Smith and Wollensky's they were $2 and $3 a pop and they were quite delicious..we had a dozen and then split a main.. and because we were feeling especially decadent we even had ended the meal with yum coconut cake.

The oysters at Shaffer City aren't bad and they're a buck a pop during happy hour!

@JenMac Sigh, it's high on the list but all I've done the last couple of weeks is work. I'm in that area often, though, so I should make it over there soon...

$1 per oyster is still pretty expensive when you add it up (in terms of objective price, not in terms of relative to other oysters). Although they are delicious...that said, I don't find them more or less delicious than other seafood. I'd rather have a plate of moules farcis any day!

@ajadedidealist Well, you generally don't eat a truckload of oysters per session or you'd get pretty sick. So $1 a pop is very affordable even if you're a major oyster junkie. @Uraniumfish I don't know the place, but today was so hot that an early evening oyster binge with some sparkling wine would have been just the thing...

Okay, now I'm feeling kind of punished, thinking of all the oysters and sparkling wine I could have, though all I do these days is grab hurried dinners in between working too much...

@Uraniumfish just think of all the oyster dinners you will be able to buy from the proceeds of all that work :)

And besides, who said I was getting paid more than a slave's wage?....See? Here I am complaining again. First thing on my purchase list isn't oysters, though, it's shoes...

Oh, no, not the oysters and sparkling wine conversation! Guess I've got to schedule a hot date soon, since I too am merely earning slave's wages.

I used to not care about shoes, @uptowngirl/uraniumfish. Then I got my first pair of Nice Shoes and now I'm hooked. I don't like spending money on shoes, especially since I have a weird foot condition that means |I wear them out in months, but I love scouting vintage shoe finds

See, uptowngirl, it's that kind of thinking about women=shoes that freaks me out about SATC too. After too many women repeat that too many times, men start to believe it too and expect us to be that way. I also don't especially care about shoes, though I care about looking good and dressing as well as my wallet will allow, so, yeah, shoes go along with that...

I didn't mean to lecture you just now, uptowngirl, just thought how annoyed I'd be if the same comment came from a guy...

@Uraniumfish no offense taken but its not SATC that gave birth to that impression more likely it was Imelda Marcos and her humongous collection of shoes.. anyway I know enough men who share my passion for shoes.. so they dare not say anything to me..

@Uptowngirl: How many men do you know who are passionate about shoes, unless they are gay. Most men I talk to are more concerned with sports than anything else.

@Uraniumfish Did the women=shoes thing come exclusively from SATC? I am trying to remember what life what like before Carrie Bradshaw... @hhusted I actually know a fair share of straight guys who maintain high shoe standards.

@BroadwayBK: Oh, well. What can I say. Is it vanity, ego, or simply wanting to fit into the corporate environment?

I have a ton of male friends who are very straight and obsessed with sneakers. A few of them have over 50 pairs.

@BroadwayBK -- I think the shoe obsession for women was always there -- but, maybe SATC made it ok for gals to fly that shoe flag out in the open.

I like men who pay attention to their shoes, actually. It shows an ability for detail that's especially attractive to me, for some reason. Maybe I just don't go for the grungy hairy unshaven types. Anyways, when I see a good pair of men's shoes on the subway, my eyes tend to travel up to check out the rest of him. (Was that too personal?) Sorry, I was just trying to say something like shoes doesn't equal gay in my humble opinion.

@Uraniumfish. I don't think I have a girly shoe fetish yet - I have no interest in Louboutins or Manolo Blahniks - but as someone who used to recycle one pair of black pumps for everythign having - gasp - a pair of brown shoes is exciting to me!
