New York City grapples with the recession

Mayor Bloomberg announced a slew of layoffs for city employees in an effort to plug the ballooning budget deficit.

It remains to be seen how these cuts affect the quality of life in the city as both the police department and the fire department are going to be affected by these layoffs. Suddenly a job with the city doesn't look all that secure.

We'll just go back to the crime-ridden city we had in the 70's, that's all.

If crime gets any worse, you may find a ton of people leaving this city in droves. This may be a happening city, but I'll bet people in this city would rather be safe than live in convenience.

I think a lot of people have already left - the reason I got my Chinatown apartment is because the guy who has had it for all these years ran out of money and had to move upstate. That's why it's suddenly affordable to live in Manhattan.

It always baffles me that these great writers 100 years ago were just roaming the streets of the West Village and hanging out at the bars although most of them were dirt poor. I know the West Vill wasn't what it is now, but those brownstones were there and artists can't live in the city at all now. It's crazy. Even Broadway actors can't live in the desirable neighborhoods.
