More police activity on subways?
Is it me, or are there a lot more roaming cops in subways and on trains lately? Seems like every time I board a train, I spot a couple of police officers keeping a watch in the stations, or riding the trains. I don't remember that being the case in past years. My imagination?

NOOOO! I noticed this too. They are often at the turnstiles and they're pretty geared up for people who are just hanging out for no reason.

Interesting, no? I'm glad they're around. I ride trains late all the time and it's good not to feel too worried about something happening. Still, I wonder why all this visible presence all of a sudden?

Yeah, I feel the same way. I'm glad to have them there, but I also wonder what they know that I don't.

I've noticed this! The other day there were bag-checkers at the Union Square metro stop

Well, they are not just in subway stations. There has been an increase in cops on buses.

Is it an anti-terrorism measure, do you guys think, or just for more "local" safety?

In Bushwick I noticed a definite drop in roaming police officers. During warmer months there were so many in the area around Graham and Broadway and in the winter they seemed to retreat into their cars or something. Now they are slowly coming back...

@ajadedidealist It it has to do with local safety, probably, because they have cops stationed round the clock now at my Crown Heights station. And Crown Heights is not exactly high on the list of terrorist targets. I mean, not a lot to bomb besides a kosher bakery and the fish market. @Uraniumfish It does seem that the cops are more visible now for some reason.

What? I haven't noticed more cops on the subways at all! Not that I would mind if there were. Cops are always welcome on the subway.

That's a good point, @Dblack. I've only ever seen them in Union Square so I wasn't sure. Although then again, Union Square has little more than a farmer's market and the former Virgin Megastore building - hopefully not exactly glaring targets.

@everyone the Moscow subway just got bombed this morning and there were two stabbings on the No.2 train to Brooklyn over the weekend so I guess we are bound to see more NYPD presence in and around the subway though I really wonder if someone wanted to do something would the cops be able to apprehend him/her in the huge crowds that pack the subways especially during rush hour. I use the subway extensively and do sometimes think of this but always push to the back of mind so I dont get spooked.

My heart goes out to the people in Moscow - what an awful thing to happen! I pray to God nothing happens to anyone in NYC!

That always crosses my mind. I do that thing where I look around and think -- does this look like the group of people I imagined being with when I die? . . . And, then I shrug and go back to my book. It's morbid, but it could happen.

@JenMac, uptowngirl NYC is definitely a target city, so, yeah, although it doesn't help a lot to think about it, bad things really could happen any minute...

@JenMac I have the same exact thoughts before shrugging and returning to my book.
