Lipstick Building

An architect friend recently pointed out that we have a landmark called the Lipstick Building, which I didn't even realize. Well, folks, here it is, and I was there not too long ago and got to admire it from close up.

Incidentally, that area has a lot of architecturally important buildings, so maybe I'll do a list soon...

The building apart from its unusual design is also known for having housed the offices of the the ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff whose firm Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities occupied space from the 17th to the 19th floors.Btw its all gone quiet on the Madoff front hasn't it? there has been no news of him or his wife lately?

Oh, that's a great factoid, uptowngirl. Why has this building never appeared on my radar before? Well, so I notice in the description of the building they weren't exactly boasting about Madoff being a former tenant.

Madoff is serving time in prison. As for the building, I took a look at it and found it to be rather unique. I honestly never saw a building shaped like that before. Wow.

That's really what I love about NYC. These gorgeous buildings that are so numerous and varied you don't even notice all of them until they're pointed out to you!

The Lipstick building is surprisingly lovely; I like how the name gives the phallic-ish structure a feminine tint, and I think it actually looks elegant. Did you guys see PPG Place in Pittsburgh, created by the same architect, Philip Johnson? It's pretty spectacular: http://www.galinsky.com/buildings/ppg/index.htm

Yes, ajadedidealist, I fully agree with you. The number of gorgeous buildings really make it an exciting place to be. Everywhere you walk you can see eye-catching architecture, or some kind of history behind the building.
