August block parties

Everywhere I turn, there's another block party lately. As I type this, I'm hearing the booming music from the block party on my own street. I don't know how legal it is, but people even knocked out a fire hydrant and it's been spewing water all day that the children have been playing in. I'm sure tomorrow the party will just move to the next block over. Seems like it has just been making its way through the neighborhood all August.

Oh, summer! I miss the city in the summer - block parties may be loud, but they're a great community spirit builder

I guess everyone is just maxing out their last moments of summer! Can't say that I blame them. And while I'm sure it's not legal to just open up a hydrant, my neighbors do it every time they have a big family gathering/ BBQ on the front sidewalk. It's cool for the little kids - it's like their version of a kiddie pool. A lot of people swing by and wash their cars in it, too, I've noticed.

@NeverSleeps Any idea how it gets turned off? Do you just need a big wrench or something? The kids certainly enjoyed it over the weekend.

@Everyone except for street fairs have never really experienced a block party on the UES.

@Uraniumfish They run out of water eventually and then you can put the cap back on. When people open them, they put sprinkler caps on them so they shoot out into the street and stay under pressure.

Haha - I've never seen that happen before! I must say I'm sorry to have missed the sight.
