A town with a history that is traceable to 1661 definitely has significant history! Mamaroneck is said to be one of the earliest settlements of the area - what we today know as the Town of Mamaroneck started when English merchant John Richbell purchased land from the Siwanoy Indians in exchange for items such as tools and clothing. The Native American origins are reflected in the name Mamaroneck, which is said to mean "where the sweet waters fall into the sea."

Mamaroneck, like the rest of Westchester County, saw a lot of skirmishes and battles during the Revolutionary War because this whole area was wedged between the British troops in New York City and the Colonial Headquarters in Peekskill.

The town was officially created in 1788 by the New York State Legislature and grown steadily. What was once a farming town was transformed by the railroad passing through and went through a phase as a popular summer resort in the early 20th century. The popular commuter town of today has many stories to tell for those interested enough to dig around in the past!
