"More than just a winding road..."

I haven't spent much time here, but I have driven through many times and I do know that Lombard Street is a part of highway 101, which has the genius design move of running directly through San Francisco. The area is fairly populated and it there is some shopping, but there will always be cars in the area. Fortunately, for those of you using this as a commuter street only, it is not nearly as bad as the nearby Van Ness.

The surrounding neighborhood is quite nice but certainly comes with the San Francisco price tag. Relax, bring your ipod (and a car adapter because no radio adapter will work in San Francisco), and remind yourself that the Golden Gate Bridge is not far off.

"Busy Thorough Fare to Postcard Perfect"

Lombard goes from Fisheman's Wharf to the Golden Gate Bridge. From the Wharf, it's mostly residential with a few coffee shops along the way for the first 4-5 blocks. Then, you have to climb up a very steep hill to get to the bottom of the "curvy street", which does look like a postcard especially in the Spring and Summer months. It is also, perhaps one of the most photographed tourist attractions. If you are going to drive down it, then be prepared to possibly wait in a little bit of a line, especially on Saturdays during the day.

Past the curvy street there is more residential until you get past Van Ness Avenue where it becomes a thorough fare to get to the Presidio, Golden Gate Bridge or the Richmond district. Very busy, but lots of restaurants and non-chain hotels along the way. Quite a number of sushi restaurants as well. This lasts for about 10-12 blocks and then it becomes residential again for a block or two before you hit the Golden Gate Bridge.

"An SF Post Card"

Lombard Street in Russian Hill, especially that curving stretch that everyone goes to when they visit San Francisco has got to be one of the most beautiful, most photographed and remembered streets in the world. The vista all the way to Coit Tower and back across to the Bay Bridge is certainly stupendous.

I wonder though, what it would be like to live in one of those beautiful homes right off of that street. They must, of course, cost millions and it would seem to be well worth it just for the beauty of the spot. But what would it be like to have people always poking about just outside of you home—always taking pictures, always slowly driving by, always looking up and into your home as if you were part of an exhibition. Oh look, how quaint, a real live San Francisco couple having a late Sunday breakfast. Are those SpongeBob boxers?

Living in Russian Hill would be fantastic and I guess I would put up with tourists for the opportunity, but if I were going to live on Lombard, I would try a bit farther west if I could, just to avoid the hassles.

"Amazing downhill drive!"

While visiting San Francisco one of the coolest streets I drove on was Lombard Street. Though this residential street did not contain many stores, the view was amazing. My favorite section was between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets on Russian Hill. In this section Lombard had some of the sharpest and windiest turns I had every driven on. If you are every in the area I would certainly recommend a drive by.

"Topsy, Turvey Road of Fun!"

This eight turn road is definitely worth going to see if you are around the area. This one way only street has been deemed one of America's most 'crookedest' street. On any given day the streets are packed with tourist visiting the many wonderful shops lining the street. I would recommend seeing this wonderful San Francisco attraction.

"LOVEbard street"

lombard is an amazing street.. supposedly, it has the most twists and turns in a street in SF. there's tons of shopping here and the street is beautiful and clean! you can drive or walk and enjoy a lunch outside on a beautiful sunny day. this street also leads you to the water and towards the historic landmark of the golden gate bridge.

"Tourist attraction"

Even though the Lombard street is a long street, but you will remember the tourist attraction part of the street, beautiful, of course, with flowers along the curly road, famous in San Francisco. But I wouldn't want to live here. It's hard to park or drive your car out of the garage since tourist cars are often lined up the road. Definitely, it's not a place for family with kids. At the bottom of the hill, you can see tourists line up and take photos. It's always crowded. But it does bring a sense of pride if you owe a house on this area. I assume the houses here must cost a fortune.

"Crookedist Street in America"

This street was so cool! Many people told me that I had to visit the crookedist street in America; I thought that they were just joking, but it is so crooked!! I've never seen anything like it before. And what is even more amazing is that people actually live on this extremely crooked street! I was on a tour bus when I went through this street, which in it's self is funny watching this huge double decker bus try to manuver down this crazy cool street. If you're in the San Fran area I recommend that you visit this street, it's a quick detour, so there's nothing to lose!

"What a ride."

The Lombard Street, is one of the most famous streets in San Francisco and I just had to experience it when I visited. At first glance the street looks like a huge snake, twisting and turning at sharp angles all along the one of the steepest hills I have ever seen. When you actualy get to travel on the stree ( which only gose one way) You end up a little bit disapointed by the 5 mph spped limit untill you see all of the flowers that people have planted and laid around the curves to remeber thier loved ones. The street is set in a very picturesq setting with cute apartemnts and condos lining either side and tons of flowers planted along the side.

"Lombard St. Has It All"

Lombard is a great street that gives you a lot to see in San Francisco. My brother lived by Coit Tower right there on Telegraph Hill. There are a lot of nice houses on Lombard St. on that end. Also you can get a great view of the crooked street more towards Russian Hill. The crooked street is a tourist trap, but something you have to see. If you go past that, you end up in the Marina which has some great spots then will eventually lead you into the Presidio. All in all, this a great street to in San Francisco.

"You can't visit San Francisco and miss Lombard Street"

Lombard Street is one of the places that you have to visit when you travel to San Francisco. It takes some time to drive the length of the entire street, and it is definitely slow going, but it is worth doing once in your life. Be careful and watch for pedestrians and traffic hazards, and drive slowly.

"A famous street that is really chill"

Lombard is definitely one of the more popular streets in San Francisco, especially for tourists. It is actually much longer than just that squiggly part of the street. It is a beautiful street in all. It is close to many parks and restaurants. It runs from around Marina to the Embarcadero. Very close to places like Fort Mason and Chinatown. It has access to many muni buses as well. A cool places for a couple of friends to just chill. Pretty safe in most areas. Most definitely a street that needs to be checked out. I would recommend to people of all ages.

"A must see if you visit San Francisco."

A portion of this street draws alot of attention for being "the most crocked street in the world". I was on the tour bus when I saw this street and didn't see the crookedness right away, but as soon as I saw a car drive down, it was clear. This is a long street, but the part I visited was quite nice and very "tourist friendly"

"A crooked and famous street in S.F."

Lombard street is a very long street that goes from the North Beach district to the Marina District. Although this street is extremely long, people only come to see a small portion of it. Lombard street is famous because of it's crookedness. This portion of Lombard street is located between Chestnut Street and Greenwich street. The houses on this portion on this street are extravagant and mansion-like, which I heard is a pretty good place to trick-or-treat. The road is also paved differently from the other streets since this is like a landmark. Other than the curvy part of the street, Lombard street is just like any other street in San Francisco. Overall, this place is alright because it is a view.

"So much more than a bunch of sharp corners"

There are two things that I really love about Lombard St. The first is that it takes you down to Telegraph Hill, but that's for another review. The second, is probably the what Lombard St is most famous for - The "Bring Your Own Big Wheels" downhill extravaganza! Bet you didn't see that coming :)

Well, technically that's not true. The BYOBW is no longer held on Lombard St. But if, like me, you feel the need to shed a tear at the relocation of this annual spectacle, then you need to visit Lombard between Hyde and Leavenworth and observe a moments silence.

While you're there, take a walk down from Hyde to Leavenworth. You'll see much more than if you drive. You'll also rediscover your legs. That is unless you're some sort of marathon runner or moountain climber. Your kids have too much energy and won't leave you alone? No problem! Challenge them to race each other up and down the street. Sleep well kiddies :)

"BOLT YOUR SOCKS ON HONEY!!"

I'm not prone to visiting tourist attractions, unless they are part of the local color, folklore, or something homespun. BUT, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and do it. Lombard St. is one of those things you have to see, at least once. But once is never enough. It's like going to the top of a roller coaster ride, when your heart starts to pound in anticipation, just as you come up to the crest. I'll let you discover the rest for yourself, don't want to spoil the FUN!!! So, what's the speed limit? Take a guess....

"World's Crookedest Street, pretty, ritzy street...."

OK, it is the most touristy part of Russian Hill, but it is fun to drive down it and also worth it for the view at the top. You can see the bay and Alcatraz, and the flowers and shrubs are beautiful. Also, if you walk around the area, you can see some pretty little lanes that have staircases to the street as it so hilly here. This is a very ritzy residential area, and although there are not a lot of stores and restaurants here, it is fun to see where some of the city’s well-heeled live.

"One of San Francisco's most famous streets known for the crooked street!"

Lombard Street is probably one of San Francisco’s most famous streets. Although it is mainly known for being the world’s most crooked street, there’s also much more to Lombard than the short one block that is actually crooked. It is actually a fairly long street and a good portion of it is also an extension of highway 101. This area is filled with plenty of stores, and restaurants. There are some great places to eat here with plenty of nice stores to do some good shopping. This portion ends on Van Ness Avenue, and Lombard immediately becomes a residential neighborhood with some expensive housing. Eventually, you will run into the famous crooked street with amazing views of the city. Lombard will then run all the way to the beachfront.

"except for the switchbacks and flowers, it's entirely forgettable"

The switchbacks are all downhill (it'd be much more fun to watch some kid learn to drive a manual transmission up the street rather than down it) and it seems to always be packed with traffic. The flowers are entirely transitory as well -- in fact they were dead and brown when I saw the street. And yet... and yet it's one of San Fran's most memorable streets. So memorable that I almost forgot about it entirely.

"The definitive San Francisco street?"

Highway 101 crosses the Golden Gate to reach San Francisco. In the city proper, the 101 becomes Lombard Street, a classic San Francisco hilly street, with Victorian row houses, views of landmarks like Coit Tower & the Transamerica Pyramid & that infamous steep, twisty section that tests bikers legs.

Lombard is like an aorta that connects you to the rest of the city & its fantastic restaurants, attractions, waterfront. Bring a bike & strong legs to really appreciate it.

"More Than Just Crooked"

Lombard is famous for being the most crooked street in the world...I think. But that's just a touristy thing and Lombard is much more than that. The street is a long passage way into the city from the Golden Gate Bridge and it is full of hotels, restaurants, bars and more. It's a great place to spend a day, just shopping and eating. And you can pop quickly over to the Marina to take in even more.

"steep and fun"

One of the steepest streets in the city, it's almost dangerous to ride a bike down or even a car. However, it is a great place to live and raise kids and is within shouting distance of major shopping and eating areas. It is one of the major arteries to the Golden Gate Bridge. Occasionally, traffic can be bumper to bumper.

"A Drive the Lenght of Lombard Street is Worth the Effort"

If you have a can when your in San Francisco, maybe you should maybe you shouldn't, what would be the best street to drive the lenght of in order to get a good taste of what the city is all about, My Choice would be driving the lenght of Lombard Street. It starts slow at the Presidio and ends unceremoniously at the Embarcereo. How ever the twist and turns you make along the lenght of Lombard give you a great idea of the general topography of the city and environs. Drive carefully on the switchbacks near Russian Hill but be prepared for the great view when you reach the top (it's worth the effort). Normally I'm not a big fan of driving in big cities but if you have a car make the most of it.
