"GREAT Bay Area Park"
This has to be one of the best state parks in the Bay Area, and offers several different fun outdoor activities. It is primarily known for hiking, backpacking and rock climbing, and is home to the Skyline portion of the Skyline to Sea Trail. For those who aren't quite as ambitious, beginner, intermediate, and advanced hiking trails abound through the redwoods and wind through an Avatar-like setting.
But the rock climbing is really what makes this place as popular for the local outdoor folks. The myriad of single-pitch sport and trad routes is unlike any other in the SF Bay, offering great training opportunities for those seeking larger prospects in the Valley and other portions of the Eastern Sierra. Whether you are a beginner or an expert climber, Castle Rock offers some great options - just be sure to have a partner who knows what they are doing!
The biggest downside to this park, like anything else in the Bay Area, is that it is abnormally crowded. Add to that the $8 parking fee, which doesn't do much to minimize visitors, and there are two major strikes against this otherwise fantastic spot.
But if you live in an area where large amounts of people work in one of the most metropolitan cities in the world and STILL want to go sleep on the ground on weekends, can you really complain?
