What is a family friendly town near in beach in South Carolina?

I am looking into moving to South Carolina from Illinois and I was wondering if there were any specific towns that you know of that are good for families and are safe and I would love for it to be close to the beach and stores. But I would also like to have some space so it's not overpopulated.
