"Not quite there yet but soon"

Bushwick is still definitely considered in the "up and coming" category and a lot of it is really sketchy. But, I have a lot of friends that have started to move out to Bushwick and it seems to be becoming what Williamsburg was like 10-15 years ago. It's really industrial and in some parts desolate but it has become really arty because of the cheaper rents. Flushing is probably the most busy out of all of the streets in Bushwick. There are still a lot of scary looking warehouse kinds of buildings but there are some cool things on this street.
Arancini Brothers is a fantastic place to get risotto balls. They are really serious about their balls, and, man is this place fantastic after a night of having a little too much to drink. It's cash only but the meat ragu ones will make you come strapped. Life Cafe off of Morgan is another fantastic spot to get some serious hangover breakfast. It's pretty healthy and really cheap. You get a breakfast sandy for $6 and the place has a great vibe. It's also open til 1 am on the weekends which is nice if you get off to a late start. The Wreck Room is a fun bar on Flushing that happens to have vegetarian bar snacks (although I wouldn't eat them). It reminds me a lot of Motor City which is one of the most repulsive bars I've ever been into but happens to also be one of my favorite bars in New York. It's really seedy looking and there are a lot of hipsters there, but I always have fun.
Franklin Ave isn't exactly the safest place to live and it's not the prettiest. But, the rent is cheap and it's definitely really up and coming in the artsy fartsy / hipster world.
Pros
  • inexpensive rent
  • One or two cool bars
Cons
  • not so safe
  • ugly

"Main drag for cars and Bushwick locals"

The area of Flushing Ave that runs through Bushwick is very driveable, which can't be said for many of the streets in the area. There are some cool spots that newly arrived Bushwick residents will soon find themselves often. The first is Wreck Room, one of the most frequented bars in the neighborhood - perhaps mostly due to its size. The second is Life Cafe, the restaurant made famous when its East Village location was featured in the musical Rent. The latter was actually one of the first hipster-ish businesses to make it out to this area of Brooklyn, so it deserves some kind of props even if their tofu scramble is overpriced.
Pros
  • One or two cool bars
  • inexpensive rent
Cons
  • not so safe
  • ugly
  • too many fried chicken joints

"A Nice, quiet little street, with a bunch of great restaurants."

Vanderbilt Ave is a great street with a bunch of good, family oriented restaurants. One of these restaurants is Graziella's Italian Restaurant. This place offers great food, and affordable prices, and pretty good service. The next place to visit is Tillie's of Brooklyn. This place has a fun atmosphere, and great dessert. Overall, I highly recommend this street for family's looking for a fun Saturday night.

"Somewhat run-down street between the Navy Yard and Ft Greene Park"

North Portland is the continuation of South Portland -- they are split by Fort Greene Park. N Portland, which runs all the way from Myrtle down to the Navy Yard, is full of apartment buildings, but they are older and a stark contrast with the brownstones that line its sister street farther south. N Portland passes by the Cumberland Diagnostic Treatment Center. There are also several stores fronts, Chinese places and bodegas along it, or on nearby Myrtle. I would not feel comfortable walking along this street at night, as it's not highly traveled.

"A commerce oriented Street"

From the Nassau street one roads leads to the Flushing avenue. It runs between Nassau and Maspeth. It is quite long and a commerce oriented street. Stores and malls here give you many shopping opportunities and that too within your budget. The Chasuna mall corporation is the best place for shopping. You can see many artists performing their talents across the streets. There is also this place called Life Café NINE83. The place is simply great only if you have extra patience. Service is just too slow but snack and food is oh so delicious.
