Highway One in Bodega Bay, CA, is as representative of the movie “The Birds” as one would expect. Situated right on the bay with homes built on stilts, it has a great coastal feel that is dramatically more rural than some of its neighboring southern towns. The traffic has been mellow, based on my experience, and the Information Center provides helpful information – and a great place turn around if I’ve made a wrong turn. The lovely coastal bluffs are not far, and are a great place to watch the waves crash. Don’t be fooled by the California location – it can be chilly, so bring a jacket!

There are several restaurants, offering varying degrees of quality. I personally ate at The Tides and Wharf Restaurant, which was extraordinarily overpriced for mediocre food (for a restaurant that’s right on the ocean, I had higher expectations for the seafood). I’ve been told the neighboring Terrapin Creek Cafe is much better, although I have not personally experienced this.

The bay houses are definitely creepy – a little drafty and remote, with thin walls and very loud wind. I have a friend who lives in Bodega Bay and I find the house a bit eerie to hang out in. But the views can’t be beat!
