Is Chicago especially dangerous?

I actually don't think Chicago is actually very safe for the most part, but there are definitely some horrible areas. The South Side has some heavy gang violence, which accounts for much of the high murder rate and violent crimes. Other areas are hit or miss in terms of safety. I've felt safe, but I stick to decent areas. It depends on what you can afford and how comfortable you'll be in some places.
