"A small city mostly known for the penitentiary"
Canon City, Colorado has a population of 16,500. This small city is located just over an hour southwest of Colorado Springs and is home to the Colorado Penitentiary. What began as a small mining town during the Gold Rush quickly found prominence with some oil wells. This geographical area is considered a high desert, so temperatures here are much more moderate than some of the neighboring cities closest to Canon City. Temperatures can be up to 14 degrees higher than in other cities located at even lower elevations.
Canon City also has the Royal Gorge Bridge which is the world's highest suspension bridge and spans the gorge which was carved over three million years ago. Views from the bridge are spectacular, but certainly not for the faint of heart. The park there now has rides and attractions as well as a train ride which travels at the bottom of the gorge. This is a great place to see the natural wonder of nature at her best.
Canyon City has a median home price around $145,000. Many residents are employed by the penitentiary and the median household income is $34,200. The crime rate really changes per year with some years it being much lower than the national average and other years it being much higher. This large fluctuation is most likely caused by the smaller population. One crime can dramatically change the statistics due to the small population.
The schools in Canon City all rate average on Colorado State Department of Education testing standards.
Due to the small population and the isolated location, traffic here is not a problem. Most people drive their own cars with a few people carpooling. There are no such things as bus lines or light rail like in other parts of the state.
