"Red LIght meets Fine Cuisine"

Broadway is one of those interesting streets that changes from neighborhood to neighborhood. Down by the Embarcadero it's kind of dirty as you come up from the downtown area. Then you hit Coi - a 4 star restaurant. Then as you get further into North Beach you hit the strip clubs and X-rated video stores. Following you go through the edge of Chinatown right before you go through the Broadway tunnel and then everything kind of changes.

You cross over Polk (Russian Hill) and then Van Ness and the famous House of Prime Rib restaurant. Once over Van Ness it's considered the well-to-do Broadway. Fine schools, rich, upper class. Much like Park Avenue in New York City, saying that you live at the top of Broadway is something to be said. It gets much more leafy and green the more North you go.

Extremely friendly no matter what section of town you are in.

"Nightlife is there..."

Granted, I am writing this review based on one experience going out here, so my lens is surely clouded by my single experience.

North Beach certainly has things to do at night - if you are looking for bars, dancing, and loud music, you will not be disappointed. However, this is not your high-end nightclub scene. The crowd is very diverse, which can be good, but as a young female, I would not walk alone. People get drunk and like to chat. They like to pick up women. They like to strike up conversations that would be inappropriate in any other context.

Buddha Lounge offers loud hip-hop music and dancing, with some seating options, while Bamboo Hut, next door, is more of a bar scene. What they lack in clientele they make up for in the volume of their music.

Once the bars close at 2 AM, the crowds pour out into the street in search of some late-night munchies (which aren't difficult to find). There is a bit of a "ghetto" feel, as I heard one individual call it, and I cannot say I disagree. I saw far more men than women, and the men were not that good-looking (let's be honest).

But if you are looking for a place to go drinking with your friends and have a wide selection of bars to choose from, Broadway (in North Beach) will certainly provide that.
Pros
  • great restaurants
  • very cosmopolitan
  • good lunch break street
  • great night spots
Cons
  • Parking
  • a little dangerous late at night
  • not for the uptight
  • busy, busy, busy
  • a little dirty

"I kept getting lost and landing on this street, and wishing my destination were there."

I really liked this street. As I was driving around San Fran, I kept ending up here and wishing that had been my plan. It looked difficult to park (think Boston, etc.) But, there were nice cafes and eating outside. It was what every Urban Planner is hoping to build. Looked like a great place to feel like you are really a part of the city life.

"Great street to find all types of clubs"

Broadway is the best street for the night life and more so for the adult night life. There are several clubs and several gentlemen clubs on this street. There is a lot of traffic and people around, There are two great clubs called Broadway Showgirls and Centerfolds that are very popular.

"The culture of Broadway"

This street may not be similar to the famous Broadway of New York, but it has a culture of it's own. It's packed with nice places to eat, clubs, strip bars, and (on a good night) people. I wouldn't consider this an "attraction" to plan to visit on your next family trip, but maybe if you're in the area with a few friends or your wife.

"A testament to history"

There is a spot at the intersetcion of Broadway and Columbus that holds the most amazing mural I have ever seen. If you are interested in art and history at all then this is a must see spot. It is a two sided, wrap around mural depicting the history of both North Beach and China Town. The mural is currently being renovated and they have done a fabulous job as far as I can tell from the old photos of the builing to the new and imrpoved explosion of art.

"Strip clubs, bars, and restaurants"

Broadway is one of the liveliest places in the city. There are always a lot of people on the street, there are restaurants, stripclubs, night clubs, and shops. The homeless population here isn’t as numerous as Market st., but there are quite a bit hanging around. The atmosphere is always alive with people coming and going from different clubs to bars to restaurants. There are also some of SF’s finest restaurants in this area to check out.

"Popular street in Chinatown."

Broadway is one of the bigger streets that run through the district of Chinatown, both figuratively and literally. The road seems to be a little bigger here than other streets that cross through Stocktown, the main street. There are also lots of miscellaneous restaurants and boutiques here. The old gelato place at the corner had recently been converted into a Tuttimelon (a frozen yogurt place). There is a pet shop which is very popular, and will usually be filled with many youngsters marveling at the fishes and turtles in the back. There are apartment buildings of about three or four floors scattered about. There are some very famous Chinese restaurants on this street, and a very good hole-in-the wall Thai restaurant. You will find lots of locals on this street buying groceries and eating, and it will be most crowded during the weekends and major Chinese holidays.

"Broadway Street: A very long street"

This street is very well known in San Francisco, even it's name is famous. This street actually leads from the Presidio to the Embarcadero, which is quite a distance. I wouldn't reccomend this street to young children because there are a lot of bars, clubs, etc. At the day time, it is alright for children to roam around this street, but at night time, it's best if they stay home. Because this street is so long, there are many facilities. This street is near several parks, it passes through Chinatown, libraries, hospitals, clinics, schools etc. There are some very nice houses on this street, but it depends on the region you're in. There are also cafes, restaurants, and stores scattered around this street. Because this street is so long and it passes so many places, it's great for sight seeing or getting familiar with San francisco.

"not much going on here"

if youre not into strippers then this is going to be a boring street ti visit, theres not much elese here except old liquer stores and hole in the wall food joints. oh did i mention the traffic, if you are headed for a strip club or mabe to one of the food spots dont expect to be able to park on the main street its crowded till the regular stuff on the street shuts down.

"Strip Clubs and More"

There are some fun clubs on Broadway. When I was single, I was here almost every weekend. Yes, there are many strip clubs, but those were fun, too. I never had a bad experience at any place on Broadway, at all. It's a great place to party, but pretty boring during the day. There are also some great buildings on this street and it's actually a very pretty place to live.

"Runs through San Francisco's 'Red Light District'"

This street it somewhat interesting, but I found it just mostly scary. It runs through the "Red Light District" of the city, harboring strip clubs and the like, offering lots of creepy guys to tell you that you need to come in. Has some clubs and bars worth going to, and the craziest hostel I've ever been to, the Green Tortoise- which I would highly recommend for the partying traveler.

"It's only a name"

This street has nothing in common with the famous Broadway of New York. No culture, the people are not as outgoing or kiind, nor are they as entertaining. This street has some things to do, but overall it is not a great street. If you are passing through, just roll up your windows, hold your breath, and keep passing through.

"Busy and bustling street with lots of night life!"

The name of the street says it all for Broadway Street of San Francisco. It is a fairly large and long street that starts from the eastern San Francisco water front and runs through a large portion of the city. Broadway runs through Chinatown and North Beach (Little Italy).

The area on Broadway next to Chinatown and North Beach consists of a very busy and bustling night life. The street around this area is known as San Francisco’s adult district. Strip clubs and gentleman’s clubs make up much of this area. There are a large number of clubs and they range from small ones to huge ones. In addition to strip clubs, there are a few nice restaurants if one can deal with the debaucheries going on.
