How close is Alamosa to the sand dunes?

Is it a long drive?

Yeah, it only takes about 40 minutes to get to the Dunes. I know it may sound crazy to some but winter camping at the campground at the Dunes --there is only one campground truly in the park-- is the best. You have almost the whole campground to yourself and the whole dune field most days. And if you bundle up night hiking on the dunes is like being on another planet! There are no obstacles and nothing to hurt you so you can just walk and look at the stars:)

The Great Sand Dunes National Park is only about a half hour northeast of Alamosa.
