"Drug infested haven"
I agree with @StephSF 6th street is a dump. They are trying to rebuild 6th street all the time but it is infested with drugs and cops galore. The traffic is always congested, it's dirty. I certainly don't feel safe there no matter what time of day. And the best is that the drug addicts could give a crap less about walking right out in front of your car even if they don't have the right of way. They have no regard for their life.
Honestly, other than it being a straight shoot to the freeway, I really can't think of one redeeming quality of 6th street.

"Seriously??"
I can't believe that the reviews of 6th street are as generous as they are. This is notoriously one of the most high-crime areas in the entire city. I actually tried to turn on this street and ended up avoiding it and walking on another block. This area, part of the Tenderloin district, is notorious for low-income housing and higher crime rates (at least according to Wikipedia, and the neighborhood seems to be representative of this statistic when you walk through). There are many neighborhood cleanup projects, including shelters, soup kitchens and other social services, but the homeless people do appear to spill out onto the streets.
Given the proximity to so many other San Francisco icons, including the Bay Bridge, AT&T Park, the Civic Center and Union Square, it is hard to believe that this neighborhood is here, but it is here and crime seems to be on the uprise. There is some gentrification happening, but overall, this neighborhood has a long way to go. If you want to live in an up-and-coming area, move to the Mission. If you want a cheaper hotel near downtown or Union Square, stay in Fisherman's Wharf or the Financial District. Don't hang out here.

"Alright street with some decent places to eat at"
6th Street runs through Golden Gate Ave and then ends into a transition of an exit and entrance for freeway Interstate 280. Because of this, 6th Street is quite a busy street during the rush hours. There are many cafes, fast food restaurants, and restaurants to eat and dine at on 6th Street. There are one or two nightlife clubs and art galleries on 6th Street, instead there a lot of automotive businesses on 6th Street, great for those who need their car fixed. Other than all this, there isn’t much to do on 6th Street, nothing special for the tourists and isn’t really the ideal place to be living for a long term period of time.

"stank"
sixth street stinks. lots of crackheads, dope dealers, and homeless people. there's a few clubs and bars that are halfway decent.. and when i say sixth street, i mean sixth street near the downtown area. for the most part, you're safe - unless, you just look like a jerk who wouldn't know what to do if someone snatched your bag from you. not a place to lick your ice cream while walking down this stinky path..

"A great street for Singles and couples"
This street is near Market st, and all though it doesn't have the same entertainment as it, it is close enough to where you can have the peace of sixth street and the fun of Market st. in close proximity. The traffic flow is usually mild, except for rush hour, and the people around are mostly professionals who are either at work or keeping to themselves. The nightlife is a different story. That is where everyone comes out to have a good time.
