How safe is Kingman Park for a single female?

I've found a newly renovated, affordable apartment near Gales Street and 17th Street in Kingman Park, and I'm having a hard time deciding on whether or not the area is right for me. I would love to be a part of "bring up" this neighborhood, but in also don't want my presence to offend long time residents. I am white, and I do have a small dog, so naturally I'm wondering if or how much of an issue I might have walking him around the neighborhood. Basically, I don't want to be somewhere I'm not wanted, and I don't want to be a target for crime or any other sketchy business. Any thought? Please do not hesitate to be honest.
